Flexible Degree Programs

The College of Engineering has many flexible options in obtaining a Bachelors degree. The most popular amongst students is a four year track with two co-ops, a five year track with three co-ops, and a BS/MS program. Advanced placement credit can be combined to accelerate your degree program, or it can be used to help attain a combined degree quicker. The bolded options within the table is for reference for new and incoming freshmen. Please look at other years for further examples with different courses of study.

There are several options including one of our most popular programs that spans 5 years with three 6-month co-op opportunities. Other program configurations include a 4-year BS and a 5-year combined BS/MS (Master of Science). These programs are typically completed with fewer co-op periods.

4 Year

This option allows you to complete your Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in a specific engineering major in 4 years, and still have 2 co-op periods for a total of 1 year of work experience. Students are encouraged to use AP credits and transfer credits obtained before coming to Northeastern to take advantage of this option.

5 Year

This program spans 5 years with three 6-month co-op periods and culminates in a BS degree.

BS/MS

Some BS/MS degree programs may be offered in conjunction with undergraduate majors in the College of Engineering. These are 5-year programs,  at the end of which the student receives the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees simultaneously, while having the opportunity to gain up to 12 months of cooperative work experience. The programs are designed for a limited number of graduate courses (a maximum of either 8 or 16 semester hours depending upon the major) to be applied toward the BS degree. Program availability is subject to change, and is restricted to those programs posted at the time a student applies for admission into the BS/MS program. Any student seeking to apply for a BS/MS (simultaneous conferral) program must be able to complete all requirements for the program by the August, 2022 conferral date. Should this not be possible, the student will be directed to apply for the corresponding PlusOne program. For all students enrolled in a BS/MS program, all curriculum requirements must be fulfilled by the August 2022 conferral date. Please review the Bachelor of Science/Master of Science Programs Policies and Procedures.

PlusOne

The PlusOne Accelerated Master’s degree programs are also offered in conjunction with a number of undergraduate majors within the College of Engineering. When enrolled in the PlusOne Program, students complete all undergraduate degree requirements and receive the Bachelor of Science degree prior to entering into graduate student status, to complete a minimum of four graduate courses in the “PlusOne” year. As with the BS/MS degree program, the PlusOne Program is designed to allow for a limited number of graduate courses (a maximum of either 8 or 16 semester hours depending upon the major) to be taken while in undergraduate status, which can be  applied toward fulfillment of both BS and MS degree requirements. Please review the PlusOne Policies and Procedures.

Note: These curricula are for current students and are samples only – actual curriculum sequences may deviate from these samples. Programs of study are the responsibility of the student. The University catalog provides a listing of degree requirements for each program, and the DARS system provides a degree audit utility for students.
